Legends of Mussorie

Proby Cautley was with the Bengal Engineers. He was one of the pioneers of Mussoorie. He was a designer of the water supply system in Mussoorie shile holding the rank of Captain, he went on to become superintendent General of canals in India.

He dreamt of freeing the Gangetic plains of famine caused by poor monsoon. He engineered the Ganga canal to plains. The principle canal left the Ganga at Haridwar and re-entered it once again atKanpur some 535 miles later.

He surveyed every inch of the canal to determine the feasibility then submitted the report to the East India company which approved it some years later.

Most of the work on the canals was done manually. The project was a Major undertaking. It is still said to be the largest irrigation scheme under taken ever. It brought water to 5000 villages of that time.

Cautley built the first railway in India to transport building material for the irrigation project. The railway was 10 miles long. The locomotive that was brought all the way from England blew up just after 2 years of service.

Cautley later received from Queen Victoria Knighthood for his achievement. He retired to England.
